The five greatest movies of all time (in my opinion)

So the following blog is going to lay out exactly what the title suggests, the five greatest movies of all time (in my opinion.) Okay so there is no specific order to these movies. But I really do suggest watching all of these if you have not seen them before.

Number One - The Last of the Mohicans

This movie has always been one of my favourites ever since I first watched it. This movie won an Oscar in 1993 and won another 5 prestigious movie awards and was nominated for 10 more. It truly is a Romantic story that also has some gruesome action scenes, and as such caters for a variety of audiences.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it -
The Last of the Mohicans is a 1992 historical epic film set in 1757 during the French and Indian War and produced by Morgan Creek Pictures. It was directed by Michael Mann and based on James Fenimore Cooper's novel of the same name, although it owes more to George B. Seitz's 1936 film adaptation than the source novel.

Number Two -Dances with Wolves

If you are going to watch this movie make sure you book a big space in your day for it as it is rather lengthy. This however does not detract from the fact that it is an awesome movie. Just like Last of the Mohicans has some great action scenes and also has a romantic side. It is also a Kevin Costner film, and that should be enough really.

Here is what IMDB has to say - Lt. John Dunbar is dubbed a hero after he accidentally leads Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. He requests a position on the western frontier, but finds it deserted. He soon finds out he is not alone, but meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and a curious Indian tribe. Dunbar quickly makes friends with the tribe, and discovers a white woman who was raised by the Indians. He gradually earns the respect of these native people, and sheds his white-man's ways.

Number Three -Shawshank Redemption

www.imdb.com
For the few that have not seen Shawshank it is a incredible story. And thoroughly enjoyable. The main character at first seems a bit odd to the audience as he is a bit quiet and reclusive but we all learn to love him. Produced brilliantly we all don't care if he committed the crime (we are pretty sure he didn't) but we all root for him to escape. Truly brilliant.

Here is what IMDB say - Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.

Number Four - The Green Mile

www.imdb.com
Now for all who have seen this you will know that it is an incredibly sad story. For me to sum it up would ruin it but IMDB have seemed to have done it without spoilers so here is what they have to say - Death Row guards at a penitentiary, in the 1930's, have a moral dilemma with their job when they discover one of their prisoners, a convicted murderer, has a special gift.

And last but not least

Number five - Schindler's List

Now this is a incredible movie millions enjoy and love. A movie which we all know from the signature red coat.

Here is IMDB on it - Oskar Schindler is a vainglorious and greedy German businessman who becomes unlikely humanitarian amid the barbaric Nazi reign when he feels compelled to turn his factory into a refuge for Jews. Based on the true story of Oskar Schindler who managed to save about 1100 Jews from being gassed at the Auschwitz concentration camp. A testament for the good in all of us.

Really is a moving piece of film. Appealing to the good nature within all of us.

Okay so after discussion with a friend I wanted to cry after limiting myself to 5 movies, as it is so hard, so I am also adding a further watch list -

  • Silence of the Lambs
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Gladiator
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Space Odyssey
  • Fight Club
  • A Clockwork Orange
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest
  • The Godfather
  • Pretty Woman
These I also feel are movies with a must watch before you die, however watch the first five first.

This Ridiculous World
